By the way, Van Halen Greatest hits and Guns N Roses Greatest Hits, I agree with. Van Halen already had one, but they were in need of a volume 2 and essentially just packaged volume one and two for their latest best-of. Since I bought it for the price of a single cd set, it's a good thing.

Guns 'N' Roses only had a few albums, but they had plenty of hits and they've stopped putting albums out. (There will actually be democracy in China before 'Chinese Democracy' is released'.)

My rules for greatest hits is that the artist should either have enough hits to inspire a good debate over what should or should not be on it or have stopped making studio records for atleast the better part of a decade with no new studio record in the foreseeable future.

Britney Spears and Everclear have greatest hits coming out. I actually like Everclear. I have a number of their albums, but I don't think they've had the hits for a greatest hits and they haven't been off the charts long enough to deserve one.

Britney Spears has only four albums. Four albums doesn't deserve a greatest hits. Think the average album has four hits. Four albums equals sixteen hits. Thus, her greatest hits likely contains all her hits. You can't call a group of something greatest unless there's something outside of the group for the somethings to be greatest than.

Also, I would like to make a third greatest hits rule. A greatest hits (or any new singles from a greatest hits) shouldn't come out too close to an actual album by the artist. Britney's last album just came out a year ago. Can't we go a short period without a single from her?

It is possible it's being released for the same reason the first Aerosmith greatest hits was released. Aerosmith's behavior was so unreliable (due to drugs) that their album being recorded was costing too much money and was taking so long, the record company had to recoup some money. Maybe the record company wants to get money from her before she truly unravels.
